Pendulum Oracle Board
This is a painted pendulum and divination board for the purposes of discovering what is true or relevant and from whom the messages arise, any given moment of a reading.
In order to use something like this, first determine which entities, symbolic or out there in the world, you wish to contact or be contacted by. These could be powerful archetypes in your life, your ancestors, the nature spirits, some deities, or other sorts of beings in our universe. I also included times of day and year, and the four directions. The circles and lines spoke to me upon asking the pendulum "show me yes," and "show me no," in addition to many forms of conditional responses that could be clarified using the other symbols on the board. I needed something like this to read for someone for whom Tarot was not functional as a modality any longer. It works beautifully, and I encourage you to make your own. There are many resources in books and online for forming your own sort of divination board.
You can also use crystals, a rock oracle, bones from an animal prepared after being brought home to you by a pet or familiar, coins, runes, or whatever calls to you as divination oracle pieces. Use intuition and functionality as your guides.

Stone Oracle
Here is a tool you can use to get you started on divination. It's simple to learn, and you can do it anywhere, as long as you have a bunch of rocks. If you can't find rocks, for some reason, this would work with other objects as well, such as a variety of seeds, an assortment of shells, some gumball machine sized toys, like keychains for example, or a variety of household things you see in daily life (a button, a paperclip, a rubber eraser, a pen lid, a safety pin, a toothpick etc). Use your imagination. Divination is about taking spiritual data and symbols from standard things and translating it into useful information.
Preparation
1. Collect a good variety of diverse looking stones about an inch in size give or take. I would suggest picking up 20-25 different unique rocks of various shapes and colours. They can be pebbles from the beach, small rocks from the gravel on the side of the road, tumbled stones, crystal points, or you may want to keep an open mind and include stone-like findings, (made of natural materials) like sea glass, shell or bone fragments (make sure they aren't sharp enough to cut), and broken bits of clay or ceramic. You'll want to make sure you don't put in soft stones with harder ones that can scratch or break them.
2. Cleanse and clear your stones of all that is harmful and unhelpful. There are lots of resources available to help you decide how to do this.
3. Consecrate, bless, or set the intention for your stone oracle, such as an intention that it be a tool for insight and healing, for the greatest good and not used for harm.
4. You may want to protect your stones from certain entities that you wish not to work with, or protect the intention and blessing from being changed by anyone else, or even dedicate them to a higher power as a communication tool with that specific being.
5. Get a pouch with a drawstring, or make one that you can use for storing the stones.
6. Get yourself a nice scarf or cloth that you can fold and fit into the bag with the stones. Any colour or pattern will do, but solid black or white silk is preferred because the colour is not promoting a specific vibration, and won't have any outward influence on the reading (such as a circular patterned cloth might make people put their stones in a circle. A red or orange cloth might make the reading very energetically intense.)
Before a Reading
* Prepare yourself by: bathing ritually, or at least washing your hands and face to symbolically purify. Then take three deep breaths and connect to your intuition and higher insight.
Reading for Others
Reading for yourself is possible, but less formal than using the tool with someone else. Adapt the following as you see fit, for a solitary reading.
1. Place a cloth on the table, if it is larger than about 8x10 inches, you may want to fold it.
2. While there are no stones - first before the first stone is cast, ask what the reading is about. (work, finances, travel, school, love etc.) This is the overall theme of the reading and every stone relates to this idea.
3. Ask the querent to pick a number between 1-9 (or if you are comfortable with reading up to a larger number like 12 or 13 or even 15, and you find them significant numbers or have that many stones you want to include, do what is intuitive.)
(they pick)
4. Ask them to choose that number of stones out of the bag and place them on the table however they see fit.
(You can tell them no peeking, or let them dig through while looking, it's up to you, let your intuition guide you)
The Reading
1. Keep in mind how they place the stones:
A. Picked and placed one at a time? this could mean the person is very organized and calculated rather than spontaneous or impulsive, and moves in response to their environment, adaptive.
B. A handfull chosen and then placed? this could mean the person is eager to get results when they do something and likes to be prepared. also, they may be the kind of person who likes to always have a plan or something to do to stay active.
C. Carefully with consideration? this could mean the person is aware of their surroundings and follows their intuition with regards to which move they make next, instead of thinking always logically. they probably have a high internal locus of control.
D. Dumped them and let them spill out wherever? this person could be impulsive or good at surrendering to their divine plan. they might be chaotic in the sense of allowing the random element in life to be what it is instead of trying to control everything.
etc.
2. Keep in mind which stone is placed first, second, etc.
- the first stone represents the querent and where they are in the moment
- the second stone represents someone influential in their life, especially around the topic they are asking about.
- the third stone represents something that is just beginning in this person's life, a new opportunity or an area of growth. the person is actively involved in this.
- the fourth stone represents what supports them, including their experiences and strengths, their home life, friends and family, or other supports that are available.
- the fifth stone represents the body, physical health, and their resources such as finances and tools of trade,
- the sixth stone represents wisdom from higher self and insight from the guiding forces in their life. life lessons they need to act out.
- the seventh stone represents their intuitive ability, and their insight into self-reflection. How do they percieve themselves? How do they talk to themselves? what do they think their potential is? it is about their dreams and fantasies.
- the eighth stone represents the cycle they are on, whether they are stuck or leveling up, whether they are repeating lessons again or in a peak or valley of experience, and how they are relating to others who are at that space. It is this stone that makes clear what they are saying to the universe, and putting into motion with their words.
- the ninth stone represents completion and wholeness, what is it that they are integrating or need to integrate in order to feel satisfied? what is it that they are manifesting or need to achieve in order to feel whole?
Additional Stones and Numerology
I usually regard the energy of numbers above nine to be consistent both with each digit of the number having significance but also the sum of the digits being most significant. For example, a ten is a one plus zero, but one is the most important value in it's meaning. Ten differs from one because it has more of the energy of completion from the zero, but ultimately is still about self.
- tenth (numerology being 1+0=1) stone represents one's orientation to the world from where they are at. it is about the wholeness of self and doors closing that open new doors. what they have finished with and what it brings.
- eleventh (1+1=2) stone represents relationship to self. it is about the disconnect between appearances and realities within the self. it is a cosmic mirror and it stands for the quest of self knowledge.
- twelfth (1+2=3) stone represents the fruits of collaboration and apprenticeship, and quests to protect and provide for someone. it's about what they are doing for others and how that affects their own growth.
- thirteenth (1+3=4) stone represents opens a new possibility into the way the person organizes their domestic life and the people in it. It is about the things that need to be cleaned up, sorted, discarded and restocked. And their influence on others, re: being the change they wish to see.
- fourteenth (1+4=5) stone represents areas of personal power, expansion of projects and ideas, and the demands the person has. it is about the person's space as an extension of their body, and how they sustain the territory that the person claims specialization in, such as work or an area of study.
- fifteenth (1+5=6) stone represents the the querent's relationship to the universe as a whole, and their specific role or life purpose within that cosmos. it is about accessing the wisdom and guidance of the creator to inform their work in the world.
- If they use more stones, keep this pattern of numerology in mind for your own interpretations of higher numbers, or if more information is required, name your question or specific issue and give each stone a designated significance that you intend as they are placed. for example, "What experience is relevant for the position I am applying to?" and then put down a stone somewhere, and see how it relates to the rest of the reading and that particular statement.
3. Keep in mind their shape, texture, colour, etc.
- The most important feature of the stones in figuring out how they relate to the numerology domains, is what they remind you of. If a stone looks like a nose, and it's the fifth stone in the reading, then probably there is something to do with the physical nose like breathing, smelling, or sinuses; or they work in a job with puzzles like a detective or genealogist (think "right under my nose" or "just following my nose"), or in a bakery, bath and body store, or somewhere that literally smells strongly. If the stone has a hole in it, it could represent the goddess, or it could be a tire, or a donut, or an engagement ring. Don't limit yourself to what you read in a book. Use your intuition and imagination.
- Round stones have a different meaning than angular stones, rough stones are different from smooth stones, bright stones are different from dull stones... use your intuition to guide you in deciding which properties are significant. Is the meaning that this person is abrasive, or in touch with their feminine side, for example?
4. Keep in mind the stones in their relationship to each other and the cloth on the table
A. Where are the stones placed closely eg. is the fourth stone near to the second stone? or is the pointy one near the one with the gold flecks in it?)
B. Are they apparently organized or not?
C. Are they in groups or pairs at all? What number are the stones sub-grouped together in? are they colour co-ordinated?
D. Do they form a shape or constellation all together? (a circle, square, triangle, heart, etc.)
E. Do they stay inside the edges of the cloth? (Is the person thinking outside the box? Are they centered? Are they on the edge, either on the verge of something or on the fence about something?)
5. keep in mind that this creates a crystal grid if you are using crystals, gems, or semi-precious stones.
- What energy is it promoting?
6. It helps to review the reading more generally as you close the session, to remind yourself and the querent what was discussed, and to integrate the messages into one cohesive picture of the situation you have dealt with in the reading. Thank them, thank the powers that assisted your reading, if any, and give yourself a few deep breaths and a moment of stillness. Return the stones and cloth to the pouch, and remember to cleanse and clear them before your next reading.
